Which movies do you recommend ?

Hi everybody, Iīm Sandra from Germany and I wonder if you could possibly help me.

Iīve already got all Andrew McCarthy movies on DVD you can get here in Germany, unfortunately those are not quite a lot: Class, St. Elmoīs Fire, Pretty in Pink, Mannequin, Less Than Zero, Kansas and Weekend at Bernieīs. Iīve also got Only You on tape.

Iīve just bought Catholic Boys at ebay (Australia) and Straight from the Heart and Iīm Losing you from amazon.com (hope these two are good !?, never seen them before). They should be delivered next week.

Which other movies would you recommend me to buy ? Cause I havenīt seen much other ones with Andrew, except Fresh Horses (can hardly remember that one) and Weekend at Bernieīs II and loved to see more ...

Please help a desperate fan from Germany !!!

Thanks

Hope my english isnīt too bad ...

Hi Sandrea, Thanks for posting on the message board. Have you seen The Joy Luck Club? Andrew doesn't have a huge role in the film but it's very good and he plays a nice part. It depends on what type of films you like? Another film on DVD that is very good is Beyond Redemption. Hope you enjoy all your new films. I think you will love "Staright From the Heart.

Hi Mary. thanks a lot. This page is really nice, glad Iīve found it. Havenīt seen The Joy Luck Club, maybe Iīll try this one next. Beyond Redemption sounds even more interesting to me. I usually like all kinds of genre, the movies just has to be good.

What do you think about Anything but Love and Things I never told you (Iīm not realy sure if this one is available on DVD somewhere, thougth I saw it at amazon some day but canīt find it anymore) ?

Canīt wait to get my DVDs and get to see more Andrew McCarthy !!! It getīs a little boring to always watch the same 8 films over years (although, Andrew canīt really be boring... )

Hi Sandra, I am also a fan lives in an unfortunate area for Andrew fan just the same as you. I live in Japan and reading your posts and  thinking I so totally understand you. I am happy to have such a lovely and dedicate fan like you in far away Germany. Good luck for us.

By the way... I am just wondering if you have you known "Region Cord" of DVD ?

They are the cords that identify specific DVDs that are compatible with the players typically sold in that region. There are currently 6 global region cords and if I haven't mistaken, it appears that the both cords of The United States and Australia are not equall to Europe like Germany's. And I do hate to tell you this though, if your new DVDs' cords are different to your region's one, those DVDs may not work on your DVD players.

You can see the detail in the Amazon's Help ;  http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/3193231/104-7773990-2464739#VHS

Meanwhile !! If you already have a kind of particular player that can remove the cords and get even those DVDs work which have different cords to your country's, that's no ploblem at all !!

I'm sorry for being a overkind fellow. Please forget it. I was just worring about you because once I too had tried to bought Andrew's DVDs on Amazon ect. and learnd the existence of region cords and had to give up on them. Having not able to get the special player till now... since they are too expensive for me. (shame)

Anyway I hope you enjoy your movies. Haven't gotten a luck to see "Anything But Love" but I love "Thing I Never Told You". It looks both are availlable on Amazon on DVD and VHS tape. I recommend you it. Though, there again International Format on video tape also... Don't you think it would be better we could enjoy any countries' films freely at house no matter what area we are in ?

I'm sure you do great with your English. Sorry for MY bad english. Well IF you ever can't see your DVDs I think you should better cancel the contract and get them back to. Hope this could help you. Again hope you enjoy all your films.   Mary a happy new year -- oh, it's too LONG !!

Hi Shoko. Nice to have a fellow-sufferer from the other side of the world and thanks for your reply. (I think your english is okay)

And thanks also to point to the region codes. I fortunately know about them and my DVD player can luckily manage that. Iīve already bought The Breakfast Club from USA because you canīt get this one either in Germany. (itīs so annoying!)

Normaly itīs no problem to get a cheap DVD player code free. You can find tricks on the internet. I donīt know which DVD player you have, but maybe you should try her: http://www.digitalvd.de/codefree.php4  (itīs a german side though ) Probably youīll find help there to be able to watch all region codes on your DVD player. Hope I could help a little, anyway ... GOOD LUCK !!

Would be glad to hear from you again and let me know if it worked.

Greetings from Germany to Japan.

Hey Sandra,

Good luck finding flicks!

Kingdom Hospital is very... different. But I enjoyed it. And Andrew is very very yummy - & the pseudo-main character.

As for movies, Definitely Joy Luck Club - great movie! I also adore New Waterford Girl. Andrew doesn't have a huge part, but the whole movie is chock full o' quirky goodness. The Sight was better than I expected, and I'm tempted to buy it.

Anything But Love is cute. I'm not buying it, but it had alot of heart. Very sincere.

Hi naughtyangel. Thank you for your suggestions. It really helps a little to choose some movies, because I canīt buy them all.

Kingdom Hospital is from Stephen King, isnīt it ? Iīm not quite sure if I would like it, because heīs not really my favorite author. Whatīs it exactly about anyway ?

Hi Sandra-was surprised naughty angel wasn't crazy about Anything But Love. I loved that quirky, tempermental, talented pianist Andrew played. And the background songs are my kind of music. I am surprised noone mentions Escape Clause. He is really excellent in that suspense film. Also has a couple of love scenes that will knock your socks off. I only discovered him in Straight From The Heart  a couple of years ago. Am reminding them to show it again around Valentine's Day, Feb. 14th, as they have done each year. That is the Hallmark Channel. I like the mature Andrew better than those early ones but that is how most of the girls found him. Good luck in your search. It is a happy mission you are on. And because of him we all have lots of friends around the world. Thanks to Mary for the great site. Bye-hope you will continue to keep in touch   Peggy

Straight From the Heart: Sat Jan 22 01:00P on Hallmark Channel

Ya know, Escape Clause was surprisingly better than I expected. But I'm not sure if it's out on DVD, or if Sandra's vcr can play NTSC tapes.

Kingdom Hospital is pretty dern weird. It's about this hospital with wacky doctors & patients & ghosts. And they try to help resolve this little girl ghost's issues. I enjoyed it better on DVD than tv, largely cuz I could fast forward thru the slow parts. I liked the characters & casting, but thought the plot seemed to lag.

Hey Sandra, I'm not sure if this is an option for you in Germany, but many of the flicks I've seen I got from the library or an internet movie rental place (netflix.com). I like to preview before I buy.

Hi guys. Just found out that Getting In will be released on DVD in Germany in february. But only in german language (normaly you get at least the english language as well). Although it dosenīt seem to be such a good movie !?! But hey, another Andrew McCarthy movie in GERMANY, thatīs at least an advance . Hope some more will follow ...

I also prefer the older Andrew, although I discovered him in the late 80s. Thought he was sexy then, I guess he is even more sexy now. Unfortunately Iīve only seen the mature Andrew on photos. Still waiting for Straight from the Heart and Iīm losing you ... IMPATIENTLY !!!

Well the librarys here in Germany only have the films that are also selled. Sometimes theyīve got some foreign DVDs but just a little range. Devenetly none with Andrew . But I will have a look at the page you mentioned, thanks naughtyangel.

Hi naughtyangel. I just had a look at your page. Itīs really nice, and Iīve also got the opportunity to watch the Anything but Love and Beyond Redemption trailer (and of cause all the other stuff). Hope youīre gonna put some more in !?!

I really thing Iīm going to buy Anything but Love. It seems to be absolutely cute.

Hi Sandra. I'm so sorry it has taken me long time to reply you. Thank you for putting the links for me. You help me great it's very interesting I haven't ever known those tricks of the cords! Now I'm starting to think about the purchase of his DVDs again. Thanks so much again and it won't be long you will get your new DVDs. I can't wait to hear about your comments of them. Especially please about Catholic Boys- haven't seen it yet. I am sure he is so cute in it. Bye !

Hi Shoko. Nice hearing from you again. Glad I could help with the links. So, did you find a hack for your DVD player ?!?

Of course I will report to you about the DVDs ... Iīve already seen Catholic Boys on TV, but that was about 10 years ago. I can hardly remember it. But I know I liked it.

I was wondering, do they dub films into japanese or do they use subtitles in Japan ? Because here in Germany all films are dubed into german. The problem is that Andrews german dubbing artists always change and mostly the voice dosenīt really fit. Thatīs why I normaly watch his movies in english.

Which movies of Andrew have you already seen ? And what are your favorite ones ?

Thanks naughtyangel for the link. Itīs great.

Iīve received my DVDs from amazon this week.  Mary, you were so totally right about Straight from the Heart . I absolutly love it. Itīs so romantic. It moved me to tears, I was extremely touched. Iīm thinking of buying the book now. Andrew is so adorable in this movie. And my god, does he look gorgeous.

Iīm Losing you was quite good. Iīm gonna have a look at the Audio Commentary aswell. Might be interesting.

I tend to buy some more movies now. The trailer of Things I never told you made me curious and Iīm gonna get Anything But Love.

Guess Iīll end up buying all his DVDs someday.

By the way, when I saw the trailer of Dead Funny the story line seemed quite familiar to me. Iīm not sure if Iīve probably seen this movie ages ago. If that is so I didnīt recognize Andrew in it. Shame on me !!!

No prob ladies - It's up in my links page if ya ever need it again.

Glad you enjoyed Straight! Ya know, as much as I liked it, that movie just never really caught fire with me. But I think it's only me.

I thought I'm Losing You was fab - one of my favorite Andrew performances. Elizabeth Perkins was amazing! The audio commentary is good - Rosanna Arquette mentions Andrew a bit & that she thought he did a fantabulous job. I'd love to see Things I've Never Told You - Lili Taylor is a fave of mine as well.

Ya know, I really really dig Dead Funny. Which probably verifies my weirdness, but that's cool. I'm comfortable with it.

Yeah well, guess I have a penchant for romantic movies. And Straight! was both sad and lovely.

Thought Andrew did a good job in Iīm Losing You. Must be funny playing an actor. I liked the part where he had the audition for his fathers series.

Also would like to see Andrew as a bad guy  . Could be an interesting change. Any suggestions ? I was thinking of Dream Man (although one canīt get that movie on DVD jet). In New World Disorder heīs playing a villain aswell, isnīt he ?! But that movie seems to be quite cheesy. Are there any more ?

If you want to See Adnrew play a bad guy I would suggest Stag. He is a down right creep in that film. I love it. Also he plays a very bad guy in The Heist. I liked Stag better. I too must be a romantic becasue his new love sotry films really get to me. Yeah New World Disorder was a bit cheesy. If you like Dead Funny then I really suggest Getting In. Only that is not out on DVD yet.

Hi Sandra-Happy to see you are getting lots of info about Andrew's films. As I told you I like the mature Andrew because that is where I found him in Straight. Isn't Naughty's site awesome? She is so talented. I'm wondering if you can play the vhr tapes as we have them here. I have a couple I really don't care for and would be  happy to send them to  you. I'm such a romantic I really only like the romances. I guess we told you  we are trying to get Hallmark Channel to make a sequel to Straight. If you look on Mary's message board you will see that we all let our imaginations go wild writing the sequel. It was fun. Can you get the Hallmark Channel? They do have overseas outlets. Let me know if you want those tapes and I will send them. Kansas &  Things I never Told You. Just couldn't get into them

HI Sandra, again I 'm sorry my post has been late. I 'm sure you can't believe this but, I don't have dvd player yet.  Since I had lost my desire for purchasing one because I had gotten the idea into my head that I couldn't watch Andrew dvds on normal player.. So hacks really interest me thanks. And you gave me another suggestion with your link. What do you think about region free software dvd player for PC ? I'm already installing one made in U.S.at free trial and it seems fine. I might buy it or I might get domestic one. I had never known this way either. I really thank you again.

Yes STAG ! I too definitely recommend it. I agree with Mary The Heist is not bad but..%&$&#% Stag should be my most favorite one. I'm sure you like it Sandra. It appeals me that he can play such roles which are extremely different from himself. I would think it shows his talent. Well how about Nowhere In Sight ? He seems a villain in this film also. And he was so sexy in Dream Man.

Wasn't he funny in his father's tv series in I'm Losing You ? I liked too where he was seriously reading the scenario.

Well, I think I have seen almost all of his movies in his 80's~90's except a couple of ones. They are Catholic Boys and Beniker Gang, The Christmas Tree and Common Persuit and Everything Relative. So I'm happy you saw Catholic on tv in Germany. Thanks for the comment and hope it would be aired again in there. Andrew is answering that's his favorite in his early period in his website also.

They use both of dub and subtitle in Japan. I sure understand you. Isn't his voice one of his big charms ? I 'm sorry for you to hear all Andrew films are dubbed into German. I hope they would use subtitle as well and then you can enjoy his voice.

By the way, how long have you been his fan ?  (I've been only 2years) And do you have many other friends of German Andy fan around you ?

HI Peggy-you are really gracious and have already sent Straight and Hollywood Mom for us Japanese fans. Mikako and I always appreciate you.I'll keep writing them also

Thanks Peggy for your offer. Thatīs so sweet. But Iīve got Kansas on DVD and I just ordered Things I never told you from amazon. My vcr canīt play your tapes anyway. But again thank you very much. Unfortunately I donīt get the Hallmark Cannel here. But Iīve already read all your suggestions about the sequel for Straight!. That was fun.

Both Naughtys and Marys sites are really awesome. You two do such a good job on this. And actually itīs nearly my only source of information about Andrew. Thanks ladies.

Whatīs The Heist about ? Stag is similiar to that Christian Slater movie Very Bad Things, right ? Didnīt really like that one though. Truly I donīt like Christian Slater either. Probably thatīs the reason. I think I somewhere read Stag is better than Very Bad Things ?!? Has anybody of you seen both movies ?

By the way, Catholic Boys has just arrived yesterday! Had to look at it right away. Heīs so cute in it. I really like that movie.

Oh and hi Shoko of course ... nice you replied. Yeah, I really love Andrews voice. Luckily most of the DVDs here in Germany have the original language as well as the german one. So I nearly could and can see all his movies in english. Except Only You, cause Iīve got that on on videotape .

Actually I discovered Andrew through Emilio Estevez. I saw The Breakfast Club on TV once, guess that was in 1988 or so. Then I started to watch all his movies and came to St. Elmoīs Fire. When I saw Andrew ...    ... guess I fell in love with him straight away. But from the middle of the 90s I never heard or saw anything about Andrew again here in Germany. Theyīve completely forgot about him I guess . Anyway, I started buying his movies about a year ago ... and Iīm caught again.

So I donīt have friends who are Andy fans here. Iīm afraid most of them donīt even know him.

Oh, and about the software for those dvd players: I donīt really know much about that stuff, sorry! Donīt even have a dvd player for my PC.

Oh ... wait a minute ... now I remember  !!! The Heist was that movie where they are wearing those masks at the hostage-taking, a rabbit and a pig, I think. Yeah, Iīve seen that movie. They showed it on TV here in Germany. It had an other title though (canīt remember it). Guess they showed it because Andrews co-star Hannes Jaenicke is a famous german actor. Wasnīt too thrilled about that movie. But if they show it on TV again (and I guess they will do someday) I would watch it again.

Nice to read your posts, as I haven't been here for a while (in Australia for Xmas etc).  Have to disagree with those of you who prefer the older Andrew - I am probably older than all of you put together and can still remember seeing "Pretty in Pink" on its cinema release and having to get the poster, the soundtrack etc etc.  Obsessed!

I am building up a fair collection on DVD, but has anyone managed to locate "Fresh Horses" - I really liked that film.

Also on the plane I saw a comedy show called "2 and a half men" - never seen it in the UK, but it had Jon Cryer in it - the lovely Duckie!

Hi Sandra-fun to          read all the comments and suggestions.N ow you all are into age. Put me in the older catagory there.

Since you say you are a romantic, like me, I have not seen any mention of A Father For Brittainy. I love that one but you will need a whole box of tissues while you watch it. Andrew himself does a lot of crying in it but his actingis great. It wrings you out and stays with you for a long time after you see it. Teri Polo is allso in it. I think if you can find it you will really like it. Keep posting and good luck

Thanks Mary, Hostile Force ... yeah ... I think that could have been the title. I canīt really remenber but it sounds familiar.

Hi Peggy, yes Iīve already read a little about A Father for Brittany and am quite curious about it. But I couldnīt find any way to get it, cause itīs not available on DVD or tape. If anyone in the area of England or elsewhere where youīve got PAL tapes (as I said I canīt play NTSC tapes) could send me a copy of that movie would be really nice.

I just received Anything But Love a few days ago  . Itīs a nice and romantic movie but getīs a little too kitschy at the end for my taste. Although Andrew plays a really nice part in it and makes his character very interesting and charming  . I canīt imagine anyone wouldnīt fall in love with Elliot while watching this movie.

Iīve also bought a tape of Escape Clause at ebay yesterday. Unfortunatley in german language. It was cheap though.

Of course Iīll keep in touch, you all are so nice and I enjoy talking to you.
