I am not really sure what first compelled me to trek into NYC for this event, other than I thought it was a simple book signing where Andrew would be sitting at a table and I would have the luxury of waltzing up there to get my books signed, then skurry away. Since it was being held at an Apple store, I thought it was a great opportunity to look for my son's Christmas gift from the family (his special needs school strongly encourages laptop usage early on, so we thought this was the perfect time to get him one).
As always, it was great being in NY and seeing the progress on the Freedom Tower. It was a lovely day. I headed downtown to the store, bought the laptop with the help of a really nice salesman, and headed up to the second floor. There was a stage with two chairs set up. Several cameras were placed around this little seating area. I was a bit confused. It looked more like a book talk than a signing. Sure enough, Andrew was giving a book talk. I found out that Apple was recording a Meet the Author podcast for their iTunes store. The woman sitting to my left traveled 2 hours from the Hamptons to see him. She was so nervous. The lady to my right didn't know who he was. She was about 22 years old. I had to show her a picture of the Pretty in Pink movie promo to show her Andrew.
The talk was great in the fact that he got into talking about his movies in the most detail I have ever heard. If you have iTunes, the podcast is free. I would really recommend watching it. It was awesome. The Q&A session was cute when one fella from England was begging Andrew to do a WAB 3 movie. He and his brother apparently love the movies. Andrew started talking about the making of those two movies for a bit.
After the talk, we were told by one Apple employee that there would be no book signing. But then another told us to just wait and she was sure Andrew would sign our books. The lady from the Hamptons was in near panic thinking Andrew would not sign her book. I was in near panci thinking I was going to miss my train. Andrew was busy talking to someone he knew in the audience. We were standing off to the side. Finally, he saw that he had a small crowd waiting, and he came over and signed for us.
I took some pictures during the talk, but my iphone was on video setting, so I have to figure how to change it to pics so I can send them. Twitter would not let me tweet them...kept trying to convert them to video. Ugh...just got the dumb thing a couple of days ago. Well, that won't happen next week! In any event, it was a nice but rushed encounter. I made my train by two minutes. Whew!
