METUCHEN On March 3, at the Forum Theater in Metuchen, the Friends of the Metuchen Library will present their annual fundraiser An Afternoon with Andrew McCarthy.
McCarthy, famous from such 1980s classic films as Weekend at Bernies, Pretty In Pink, St. Elmos Fire and Mannequin, has found a new career as a well-received travel and adventure writer. The Longest Way Home is his memoir about his transformation during a difficult personal time, when he was coming to terms with whether or not to make his relationship commitment with his Irish girlfriend D (the mother of his daughter) permanent or not.
This event was initiated by Friends Treasurer Alisa Schleif, who read and was won over by McCarthys memoir I heard about Andrews book through a different library. I attended his presentation without reading the book. Later, I read the book and could relate to some aspects of it. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I saw places wed been described. At one point, I laughed out loud and giggled for several days afterward thinking about his words. It hit a chord. I thought it would be fantastic if we could bring him to Metuchen.
The funds raised by this event are slated for a refurbishment of Metuchen librarys second floor. The Trustees of the Library have framed a plan and will soon begin restoration of the childrens room and the public community meeting space. The mission of the Friends is to augment these restoration efforts to create a public meeting space that has updated technology and a childrens room that is welcoming and enhances lifelong learning and literacy.
