Location: Northeast Kansas Celebrity: Andrew McCarthy and Matt Dillon I thought this was hilarious..check out the rest at www.bitterwaitress.com
"Way back when, in 1984, the movie 'Kansas' was being filmed in Kansas. The movie reached new lows in PR. McCarthy and Dillon spent a lot of time floating around the bars in Lawrence, loudly disclaiming Kansas (and Kansans) as "hicks", and "rednecks". Kansas was "middle of nowhere backwater" and they couldn't wait to get "back to civilization". They spent a lot of time in pursuit of imported Vodka.
No fewer than three incidents regarding on location clashes in filming were featured in the newspapers (Topeka, Lawrence, Kansas City). It was quite a debacle.
By the time the movie was completed, and the premiere rolled around, the movie had been blackballed in Lawrence. It never aired in Lawrence, no movie theatre would show it. In Manhattan, KS an hour and a half west of Lawrence, I saw the movie on its premiere weekend at a DOLLAR theatre. A GLARING error is featured in the film, that no Kansan had bothered to see corrected before it was completed. It was our way of disclaiming any responsibility for the film
Many still boycott movies by Dillon and McCarthy, 'cause you've got to go a LONG way to piss off a STATE".
bitterwaitres says:
harsh criticism of a whole state from a man (Dillon) who ducks under tables to get stoned.) Or used to. I'm not sure if the smoking ban in NYC applies to celebrities or their pot.
People had stuff to say about the cast of "Outsiders" way back when too! Some of it not so nice, but Dillon was part of that too. There was talk about girls, late nights, etc. It didn't hurt the movie though. The actors came out with wonderful careers. I believe Leif Garrett is probably the only one who's not faring too well right now. Anyway...I love that movie, and of course it's always interesting to find out "behind the scenes" on our favorite actors/movies. Goes to show you...good or bad...we're all people (human). I am looking forward to seeing "Kansas"...it's on my "to buy" list (as I collect Andy movies as well as watch them).
