Andrew McCarthy back on the big screen October 4, 2006
Good to hear that former Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy is on the trail of a comeback. With Emilio Estevez on the verge of one (there’s Oscar buzz for his film “Bobby”), Demi Moore making one – a comeback that is - every couple of years, and Molly Ringwald trying for one (though I doubt that “16 Candles” sequel is going to go), it’s only fair that McCarthy gets offered his second stab at Hollywood stability.
The actor, who appeared in 80s hits like “Pretty in Pink”, “Class” and “Less than Zero”, has been signed to appear in Paramount's big-budget adaptation of "The Spiderwick Chronicles”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie, which also stars Freddy Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Martin Short and Joan Plowright, is a film mixing live action with visual effects.
"Spiderwick" is based on the best-selling books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi and centers on twin brothers Jared and Simon who, along with their sister Mallory uncover a world of fairies and other creatures.
McCarthy - who has been slumming it in DTV land in recent years - would play the husband of Mary Louise Parker’s character, and the father of Jared and Simon.
Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Martin Short and Joan Plowright are in negotiations to join the cast of Paramount's big-budget adaptation of "The Spiderwick Chronicles," being directed by Mack Waters.
Izabella Miko and Andrew McCarthy also have boarded the production, which is being made by Nickelodeon Movies, Atmosphere Entertainment MM and the Gotham Group, and is mixing live action with visual effects.
"Spiderwick" is based on the best-selling books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi and centers on twin brothers Jared and Simon who, along with their sister Mallory uncover a world of fairies and other creatures. Freddy Highmore already has been cast as the twins, and Sarah Bolger will play the sister.
Parker would play the kids' mother, worn out by her recent separation from her husband (McCarthy).

Director Mark Waters has grabbed six more thesps to star in Paramount’s next crack at a kiddie book-based fantasy franchise, The Spiderwick Chronicles.
Weeds’ Mary-Louise Parker is currently negotiating to play the three central kids’ mother, who sends them to live with family after suffering exhaustion following a difficult separation from her husband (Andrew McCarthy).
Also signing on are Nick Nolte and Martin Short, who will voice supernatural creatures Mulgrath, an evil shape shifter looking to snatch the kids and Thimbletack/Bogart a creature that can protect or disrupt a household, depending on its mood. Joan Plowright will play the children’s’ aunt, who’s packed off to an asylum because she – and no one else – can see the creatures.
And finally, we have The Foresaken’s Izabella Miko, cast as the leader of a group of elves. The movie is now shooting in Montreal.
Great news Rach,Andrew desrves to be up on the big screen again, who knows when It Is released my long suffering husband might take me to see It,for some strange reason he doesn't love Andrew as much as I do,Don't know why!!!!
Wow Rach - what great news. I was afraid he was out of work and doing only volunteer stuff. Now we know where he is- Montreal is a lovely city.
I always wonder how you gals in the UK and in Japan find the news. Can't wait to see this.I am not familiar with the book. Were you?
By the way, have an ad from Amazon for some big sales of UK items but don't know how to send it to you. Don't like to take this space which was meant for Andrew for personal info. If you are interested you can give me an address at nelliepeg@aol.com.
Hey Rach, Thanks for posting the great news. I was hoping eventually we would hear big news on Andrew and now we have. Let's ope we can all go see this in the theater.
I'm excited about this. Nothing on his website yet. But all the reports say he has signed on, so lets hope!! There's no news section on his site at the moment, hopefully he will add something soon.
His birthday is upcoming, right? in november. we should do something so he knows he has us supporting him!
Hey-which one of you stole my beautiful photo. All I have on here is a big blank square!!!!?How about that??? Ha
Rach I don't know who wrote the article but I sort of resent the fact that they said he has been slumming in DVT for the past few years. Don't know what DVT is but I sure don't consider Hallmark or the other filmmakers like for Anything But Love slumming, do you? Peggy
I promise I am not the one who stoled yoru photo Peggy. Yes I see the news is not yet on Andrew's stie. Maybe he needs to call RAch to find out what he is doing? ha It's easy for those people who werite the articles to say he is slumming. What do they know? They shouldn't be aloowed to werite the articles unless they see the films first.
In response to Andrew slumming it,he can slum with me anytime!!! Seriously I agree there are plenty of hasbeen actors out there, not our Andrew though. Not many actors out there would chose to do the stagework Andrew does,as well as direct and Insire many young actors, you can Inspire me anytime Andrew! Perhaps we should send letters of protest to the writer of the article, any takers,Peggy!!
Do all of you still have that beautiful photo on this page? I had it to begin with but now only get a big blank square. I really liked that photo darn it. I have the one of Nick Nolte which I could care less about. Anone have n idea what happened to it?
Thanks for trying Rach - all I get is a big empty square f rame. Isn't that strange? Wonder where it went? Do you know where it originated? I had never seen it before. The frame has a tiny red x in the corner
I never saw the picture. All I ever saw was that horrible picture of Nick Nolte. I wish I could have seen the picture. Anyway I typed in The Spiderwick Chronicles in my browser and sure enough Andrew is listed as one of the characters. The movie won't be released until 2008 so I guess we'll all have to wait. Waiting stinks.
Janet - just hang in there. I came on to thank Rach for trying. My friend Marcia who is my mentor said the little red x means you can't open it. But suddenly there it was - gorgeous- I LOVE IT!. I was able to print it out-did a second set and was able to get a glossy sheet in the right place (page 1 of 7). Can't believe it. Have no idea what happened. But just keep ttrying.
Rach - thank you for trying and maybe your efforts had something to do with it. I hate it that in order to get the picture I had to print this whole page.but that iss the way this printer works. Always costs me a lot of paper. But worth it. So now all you girls are printed for posterity. By the way there is a smaller photo at the bottom of one of the pages.
Janet because it is paprt of the whole set (all 7 pages) I don't think I can forward it but I will try
Janet - maybe Rach would be kind enough to do whatever she did for mine. Not sure if that is why I got it back. She said do you see it? and I went on to tell her no I couldn't and there it was. How about it Rach. We can't have Janet suffering like this, can we?
Rach- I guess it won't share. I hope Janet got the photo because mine is gone again. Believe that? All I have is the empty frame with the little red x in the corner. Thankfully I have my printouts, including the glossy. Isn't that weird?
By the way should I delete that ad from Amazon for the big sale on UK items?
Wow, I couldn't get the picture either but this morning there it was...great picture but I guess I am leaning towards the mature pictures of him, he certainly has "aged" well! So pleased that he will be in a "big" movie again but think that SFTH should be a no#1 on everyone's list and a remake of it should be done....with added features what do you think? Loved Anything but Love also.
